<EliYah> BrClif has a message for us tonite....please let him speak the message and make a note of any questions until the end..

<BrClif> The teaching I am bringing tonight is about how Dahvid performed "the Golden Rule" to a Yisraeli brother and how he returned good to those Yisraeli brothers who attempted to do evil or succeeded in doing evil to him. The account starts out with Dahvid being chosen to be King Shaul's armor-bearer and harp player.Apparently, King Shaul would have an evil spirit, so Dahvid would play on his harp and that would relieve Shaul because the evil spirit would depart from him. (1 Sam. 16:18-23)

Dahvid loved the King Shaul. Later, there was a Philistine named "Goliat" who defied the armies of Yisrael. He challenged any Yisraeli man to battle, while the loser of the battle agreed to permit his whole nation to be enslaved to the victor. The Yisraelim said that King Shaul had offered rewards for any Yisraeli man who could strike down Goliat, including his daughter's hand in marriage. Whoo-whoo! (1 Sam. 17:4-25) Dahvid speaks up.

1Samuel 17:26 - And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living Elohim? :27 - And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

Dahvid spoke in trust/faith and in zeal for his Elohim, but...

1Samuel 17:28 - And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

<BrClif> ...his trust and zeal was said to be pride by his own brother. He was accused of being a bloodthirsty spectator who would irresponsibly disregard the welfare of his father's flock, just so he could watch a good fight. Moreover, his brother Eliab accused him of having an evil heart.

1Samuel 17:29 - And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

But he keeps speaking the torrent of his good heart...

1Samuel 17:30 - And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

...that there would be rewards to the man who struck down Goliat... So Shaul, after Dahvid expresses trust in YHWH's ability and desire to prove Himself victorious, sends the youth out to battle. And the rest, of course, is well-known history, but less remembered is the way Dahvid gave all the glory and honor to YHWH.

1Samuel 18:6 - And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.:7 - And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.:8 - And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?:9 - And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

The women give the glory to Dahvid, and Shaul's heart becomes bitter toward Dahvid, because he has been less esteemed in the eyes of the people. And Shaul had yet to give his daughter to Dahvid for a wife, as was promised to the one who would strike down Goliat, so instead of giving Dahvid a wife, he attempted to take Dahvid's life...

1Samuel 18:10 - And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from Elohim came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.:11 - And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.

(Shaul's 1st offense against Dahvid)But Dahvid acted wisely, as wise as a serpent, and this made Shaul only fear him more, since he knew that YHWH was with him. (vss. 12-16) Finally, Shaul decides to give Dahvid his overdue reward, by telling him that he will give Dahvid his daughter Merab, but he winds up ripping Dahvid off and giving the girl to ANOTHER man! (vss. 17-19) (Shaul's 2nd offense against Dahvid) But hey! No big deal, right? Dahvid could count his blessings, correct? After all, Shaul had another daughter named Michal, who actually loved Dahvid (rare in today's conventional marriages, much less ancient arranged ones). She must have been cute, because Shaul determines that she will be a snare to Dahvid. (vss. 20,21) (Shaul's 3rd offense against Dahvid)

But Dahvid's humble heart shows through when he confesses, "Is it a light thing in your eyes to be son-in-law to the king? I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed." So Shaul tries to take advantage of that poverty by requiring him to fight a certain-death bout, this after Dahvid had ALREADY earned Shaul's daughter's hand in marriage by conquering Goliat. (vss. 25-28) (Shaul's 4th offense against Dahvid) Scripture says, "Shaul was an enemy to Dahvid continually," nevertheless, Dahvid's name came to be greatly esteemed. (vss. 29,30)

<BrClif> YaHUnatan, Shaul's son, befriends Dahvid, informs Dahvid of Shaul's intention to kill the Giant-slayer, and supposedly persuades Shaul...

1Samuel 19:6 - And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As YAHWEH liveth, he shall not be slain.

But despite his vow, Shaul attempts to slay Dahvid, again...(Shaul's 5th offense against Dahvid)

1Samuel 19:9 - And the evil spirit from YAHWEH was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.:10 - And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin; but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.:11 - Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to morrow thou shalt be slain.

Later, during the new moon, Dahvid's place was empty at the table of the king, and Shaul tries to act ignorant as to the reason he isn't there... (vss. 26,27)

Then, Shaul gets enraged, because Shaul knows that YaHUnatan is buddy-buddy with Dahvid; as a consequence, Shaul tries to kill his OWN SON, Dahvid's friend!

1Samuel 20:30 - Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?:31 - For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.:32 - And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?:33 - And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

<BrClif> Whatta jerk, eh? But Dahvid slips up a bit and seems to concoct a story so as to get some grub from Ahimelech, the cohen/priest. (1 Sam 21:1-9) Then he practices deceit again to save his hide from Achish, King of Gaht, by acting like he is looney-tunes.

1Samuel 21:13 - And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.:14 - Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?:15 - Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?

I don't think he played "Scrabble"...Though Shaul the king is out to get Dahvid, Ahimelech the cohen/priest has this to say about the youth:

1Samuel 22:14 - Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?

<BrClif> So Shaul says...

1Samuel 22:17 - And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of YAHWEH; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of YAHWEH.

<snug> wow

<BrClif> Shaul wanted ALL of the cohanim/priests of YHWH SLAUGHTERED, because he assumed that they were totally allied to Dahvid. Real good reason to slaughter a whole lineage, eh? What an offense before YHWH! See what kind of detriment there can be in having a human king or ruler over YHWH's people? Dahvid could well be offended by this pronouncement against the men set-apart to YHWH! (Shaul's 6th offense against Dahvid, inasmuch as it was an offense to all Yisrael and to the Elohim who set-apart those men to Himself.)Doeg, Shaul's servant, has no reservations about doing the dirty deed dirt cheap...

1Samuel 22:18 - And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.:19 - And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.:20 - And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.

<BrClif> 85 priests... 1 escaped...

1Samuel 22:21 - And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain YAHWEH's priests.:22 - And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house.:23 - Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.

Dahvid, however, assumes full responsibility for Shaul's murderous outrage. Maybe he felt that if he had been honest to Ahimelech about his circumstances things would have turned out better for the cohanim/priests of YHWH. However, there is little Dahvid DOES do without inquiring of YHWH what he should do...

1Samuel 23:2 - Therefore David inquired of YAHWEH, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And YAHWEH said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.:3 - And David's men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?:4 - Then David inquired of YAHWEH yet again. And YAHWEH answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

In fact, Dahvid narrowly escapes a trap because he asked of YHWH and was warned. (1 Sam 23:5-13) The men of Ziph go to Shaul to tell him that they know where Dahvid is and that they will deliver him into Shaul's hand. Shaul replies...

1Samuel 23:22 - Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place where haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is his told me that he dealeth very subtilly. So Shaul pursues Dahvid to kill him, (Shaul's 7th offense against Dahvid) but is turned back by a surprise attack by the P'lishtim(Philistines).

<BrClif> Now HERE is how Dahvid responds to this king who wants him dead...

1Samuel 24:1 - And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.:2 - Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.:3 - And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.

<BrClif> The plot thickens... Suspense builds and is killing us as we wait to see Shaul's end... Now is Dahvid's chance! One good hack with the sword of Goliat and Dahvid's problems with Shaul will be over!

1Samuel 24:4 - And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which YAHWEH said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.:5 - And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.:6 - And he said unto his men, YAHWEH forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, YAHWEH's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of YAHWEH.

Dahvid would not return evil to this one doing evil; moreover, he had a deep sense of awe for the anointing and selection of YHWH. Think! Dahvid would one day be in Shaul's shoes, as prophesied by Shmuel the prophet. Dahvid was doing as he would have done unto him. Dahvid was walking "the Golden Rule," taught by Hillel the Great and reaffirmed as sound teaching from heaven by Y[aHU]shua the Anointed One.

1Samuel 24:7 - So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

Dahvid let Shaul go. Can you believe it?!?

1Samuel 24:8 - David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, Mymaster the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

Dahvid STILL payed his respect and love to Shaul the King, even though Shaul had proven his intent to do him in. Dahvid blessed and loved his enemy. Shaul was not his enemy because Dahvid stored up enemies in his heart, but rather because Shaul had decided (or been compelled by an evil spirit) to make Dahvid his enemy. Likewise, we do not make enemies for ourselves in our hearts. People fashion themselves OUR enemies. We do not have enemies by any choice of our own. YHWH has enemies by their choice, and if we keep YHWH's ways, those enemies of YHWH will come to hate us, also. This is how we love our enemies: show them that they are nto our enemies in our hearts, return good to them for the evil they do to us (so that our consciences may be clear), bless them in the Name of YHWH.

Don't expect a change of heart in your enemy, but know this is YHWH's will, as spoken and lived by Dahvid and Y[aHU]shua.

1Samuel 24:9 - And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?:10 - Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that YAHWEH had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against mymaster; for he is YAHWEH's anointed.:11 - Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.

1Samuel 24:12 - YAHWEH judge between me and thee, and YAHWEH avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.:13 - As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.:14 - After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.:15 - YAHWEH therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.:16 - And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.:17 - And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.

1Samuel 24:18 - And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when YAHWEH had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.:19 - For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore YAHWEH reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.:20 - And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.:21 - Swear now therefore unto me by YAHWEH, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.:22 - And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.

So how does Shaul repay this good that Dahvid did to him?

1Samuel 25:44 - But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.

...by giving Dahvid's wife, who loved him, to ANOTHER MAN! Shaul's 8th offense against Dahvid) But that's not all! No sirreeee! Shaul is back to his old tricks... (Shaul's 9th offense against Dahvid)

1Samuel 26:2 - Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

How does Dahvid respond?

1Samuel 26:7 - So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him.:8 - Then said Abishai to David, Elohim hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear :9 - And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against YAHWEH's anointed, and be guiltless?:10 - David said furthermore, As YAHWEH liveth, YAHWEH shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.:11 - YAHWEH forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against YAHWEH's anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go.:12 - So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul's bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from YAHWEH was fallen upon them.

1Samuel 26:16 - This thing is not good that thou hast done. As YAHWEH liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, YAHWEH's anointed. And now see where the king's spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his bolster.:17 - And Saul knew David's voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, mymaster, O king.:18 - And he said, Wherefore doth mymaster thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand?

<BrClif> Whoops.. Back up to verse 13...

13 then Dahvid passed on to the other side and stood upon the top of the mountain at a distance, the space between them being vast. 14 And Dahvid began to call out to the people and to Abner the Son of Ner, saying "Will you not answer, Abner?" And Abneer began to answer and say: "who are you that have called out to the king?"15 And Dahvid went on to say to Abner, "Are you not a man? And who is like you in Yisrael? why, then, did you not watch over your master the king? For one of the people came in to bring the king your master to ruin.

1Samuel 26:19 - Now therefore, I pray thee, let mymaster the king hear the words of his servant. If YAHWEH have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before YAHWEH; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of YAHWEH, saying, Go, serve otherelohim.:20 - Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of YAHWEH: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.:21 - Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.

<BrClif> whoops, again... :/

<BrClif> 16 This thing that you hve done is not good. As YHWH is living, you men deserve to die, because you have not watched over your master, over the anointed of YHWH. And now see where the king's spear and the water jug are that were at his head."17 And shayul began to recognize the voice of Dahvid and to say "Is this your voice, my son Dahvid?" to this Dahvid said, "It is my voice, my master the king."18 And he added: "Why is this that my master is chasing after his servant, for what have I done, and what badness is there in my hand.

There, that oughta do it. :)

1Samuel 26:22 - And David answered and said, Behold the king's spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.:23 - YAHWEH render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for YAHWEH delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against YAHWEH's anointed.:24 - And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of YAHWEH, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation.

<BrClif> (for those of you listeners still with us... ;P )There's that "Golden Rule", again!

1Samuel 26:25 - Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

And that was the last of Dahvid's being hunted by Shaul. Is it any wonder then that in Psalms 18, the foreword reads thus?:

<BrClif> "A Psalm of Dahvid, the servant of YHWH, who spoke the words of this song to YHWH in the day that YHWH delivered him from the hand of all his foes, and from the hand of Shaul (H#7586:Shin-Alef-Cholom-Lahmed)"

<BrClif> and that Dahvid could sing (vs. 5), "...the chains/cords of Sheol(H#7585:Shin-Alef-Cholom-Lahmed) encircled/surrounded me."

In conclusion, we see how bent Shaul was on offending and murdering Dahvid and how determined Dahvid was to stay his hand from the King YHWH had delivered into his hand. Dahvid's heart was to do good to the one who fashioned himself his enemy. May we be so disposed! So let it be!
