Sukkot is less than 75 days away (this is 07/08/2024) and the Daughters Of Light (DOL) Team are initiating the plans we made over the last few weeks.

This has taught me to plan for other events – though much smaller – so that I don’t feel so behind all the time. It can get quite hectic with the day-to-day tasks as life seems overwhelming at the best of times. I’ve learned to judge my time better and even carve out time for myself (that self-care thing) so that I don’t burn out in the process.

I’ve never been much of a planner. I didn’t like writing down all the things into my calendar. It looked like I had no time for myself. Being a spontaneous kind of girl, I managed to side-step that feature in my life and continue thinking I had all the time in the world to get things done. Of course, when the deadlines came closer, I got anxious and bit down all my nails because I knew I was unprepared.

Eventually, I had to swallow my pride and start a planning list, really, a to-do list. That gave way to actual planning and I experienced first-hand the benefits of planning ahead. Instead of chewing my fingernails down past the quick, I was relaxing and reviewing my schedules, thinking about the blue skies and green grass. I switched up my “free” time and I learned to let my nails grow!

Sometimes I lapse, and I procrastinate and start biting my nails again, except I now have a system of awareness for myself. It helps me to get back on track. The reality, though, is I have learned to plan and stay on top of life’s constant tsunami waves of surprises.

I haven’t arrived. I certainly don’t have all the answers, but I’m learning that planning is more exciting than spontaneity because it allows for spontaneity, while spontaneity doesn’t make any room for planning!

If there’s one benefit, I have noticed that lasts from one Sukkot to the next, it’s planning.
