Did you know that this command originated in the book of Leviticus?
Nestled in verse 18, it says, “thou shalt love thy neighbour as theyself:” (KJV, unless otherwise stated).
It’s mentioned again three times in Matthew (5:43; 19:19; 22:39) quoted by Yahshua.
And again in Mark 12:31.
Paul mentions it in Romans 13:9 and Galatians 5:14.
And James refers to it.
Except for Matthew 5:43, all other references state, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”
As thyself.
A Closer Look
Love your neighbor as yourself.
Not love your neighbor instead of yourself.
Loving others doesn’t mean we sacrifice ourselves continually.
It means looking out for others like we look out for ourselves.
If we’re thirsty, so are they.
If we’re hungry, so are they.
If we’re cold, so are they.
Call to Action (CTA)
The next time you’re out, bring an extra water bottle, some extra snacks.
When you’re sitting down to eat, offer someone who brought nothing.
They may turn you down.
They may not.
They might not need it.
They may need it.
All we can do is offer.
That is one way to love thy neighbor as thyself.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
